Basic Vastu for Plots

The selection of a plot is very important since the plot represents a fixed form, that will radiate positive as well as negative energies depending on its location, orientation, shape, slope and soil quality. While selecting a plot these five major points are to be kept in mind. Normally a Vaastu Expert is not involved at the time of buying a plot. But as a Vaastu Expert, I would suggest that it is good to involve one, at the time of selecting a plot, as his inputs could be very valuable in deciding the right Site. Generally, the points an Vaastu Expert will keep in mind while selecting a site, will by default be in accordance with Vaastu Shastra. If you already own a plot for construction of house or office, you should still refer to the Vaastu Guidelines prescribed for the selection of suitable plot. In the Selection of a plot, the following Vaastu Guidelines should be looked into, since most of these guidelines are based on scientific reasoning and few on common sense.

WHAT IS THE BEST LOCATION OF A PLOT?

Peaceful, calm place with lot of greenery and good water source with good soil, for obvious reasons. The fertile soil is an indication of good soil for construction.

While purchasing a piece of land, it is a good idea to stand on the land and feel its vibration for a few moments. If you feel positive about it, consider buying the land. If not, it is probably not good for you. The Reasoning is that it is always advisable to trust your instinct but make sure you are not influenced by anything or anyone else, for good reasons.

Check the Plot history; it should be a good history. It is best to buy land where happy and successful people have lived. The natural reasoning behind the concept is totally psychologically, you will feel that a land where people were happy and prosperous; has good vibes or energy. Check for the road adjacent to the plot. Plot with pathways on all four sides is considered the best. It ensures health, wealth, prosperity and happiness. The natural reasoning for the logic is because a Plot with roads on all four sides is not abutting any body's property and hence one can derive maximum lighting and ventilation from all four sides. The next best option is a Plot with roads on the North or East. The reasoning I understand for it is that more light and air can enter from these sides in the mornings.

WHICH PLOTS ARE NOT GOOD?

It is advisable to avoid a haunted or dilapidated house. The Plot should not be purchased, if in the recent past someone has committed suicide on it, or if there have been several deaths over a period of a couple of months. You may psychologically feel uneasy if you happen to know of such a past. Avoid purchasing a plot that has been sold under stress. Such Plots should be purchased only with caution and proper consultation with a Vaastu expert. One good reason is that you may feel psychologically unhappy and guilty, knowing that the Plot was sold out of helplessness and that the previous owner must be still holding onto it.

We have to avoid sites near a public place or buildings. The Plot should not be near or adjacent to any public place like temple, hospital, factory, school, college etc. Such places will constantly be crowded and noisy. But if they are at least 80 ft to 100 ft away, then the plot is acceptable. We cannot live in an environment with foul smell. It is advisable to avoid sites near smelly places. The Plot should not be near a meat shop, workshop, leather tannery, laundry, shoe shop, dustbins, sewage drains etc. The bad smell emanating from these places will permeate the house permanently and naturally create a atmosphere in the house that is not suitable to live in. If the plot is between large plots, it should be avoided. In such plots the owner of the smaller plot can construct only a much smaller house than the owners of the larger plots and thus, may subconsciously feel 'small' with respect to the neighbors. This can create a feeling of inferiority in the owner.

It is good to avoid plots with lot of cracks or too much wet soil. The cracks indicate dried up clayey soil and too wet soil also indicates clayey soil that does not allow the drainage of water. Such soil is not suitable for a building foundation as it will retain moisture and necessitate extra expenditure for water-proofing the foundation. Strictly avoid Plots facing a T or Y intersection of roads. This is because you can see oncoming traffic and this may give you the nervousness feeling or lack of privacy. However, in some cases, as explained below, such plots are acceptable.

SHAPES OF PLOT AND THEIR EFFECTS

Square plot : A plot with equal length and width is considered as an ideal site for construction. As per Vaastu, it ensures all round growth, prosperity and happiness. In ancient time, houses were designed around a central square courtyard, for better ventilation, a square plot was considered the most suitable.

Rectangle plot : A plot having the length and width in 1:2 ration are considered good. If the length faces north and width faces west, it would be considered more suitable. Such plots are considered to bestow good health, wealth and prosperity upon the residents. Like in a square site, it is easy to design a square or rectangle shaped house in such plot with extra space used for trees, outhouse etc and hence is not wasted.

Triangular plot : The Triangle shaped plot is not good. Such sites are considered as sites where there will always be fear of fire.

Circular/Elliptical/Oval Plots : Such shapes are not considered good for construction of houses. According to Vaastu, such plots would bring bad luck to the owners.

Plots With more than 4 sides : Pentagon, Hexagon, Octagon shaped plots should be avoided for construction of house. People in such plots always live in fear.

Gou-mukhi plot : A plot that is narrow in the front and wide at the back is called Gou Mukhi. Such plot is considered auspicious for residential purpose. Such plots bring prosperity to the house owners.

Simha-mukhi plot : A plot that is wide in the front or entrance and narrow at the back is known as Simha Mukhi plot. Such plots are considered inauspicious for residential purpose but are suitable for commercial purpose.

Plots with corners cut : Plots with a missing corner should not be purchased for any reason. If you must, then do so with proper consultation of an Expert Vaastu Shastri. Plots with cut corners are considered inauspicious.

Plots with projections or extensions : The plots with extension in the North or East or North-East are considered good. Other extensions are considered as inauspicious. Plots with extensions in the North-West, South-East or South-West are not considered good, they bring bad luck to the owners.

WHICH IS THE BEST DIRECTION FOR A PLOT?

In ancient text of Vaastu guidelines to aid in the Selection of a plot with the ideal Orientation are based on Common sense, scientific reasoning and logic. As per Vaastu: All directions are considered good and each has its own advantages. The only reason I understand is; in any city or town, there are roads in all four directions and naturally there have to be houses on both sides of the roads. Also, the city looks more aesthetic if there are houses in all the four directions. Hence, according to Vaastu, all plots are considered good. East facing Plot is good for scholars, philosophers, priests, professors, teachers etc. The Logic- East (morning sun rays) is considered the source of enlightenment. North facing plot is good for those in power, administration and those who work for government. South facing plot is good for business class and for those who work in business organizations at management level. West facing plot is more suitable for those who provide supporting services to the society. The reason why Vaastu attributes each direction to a different class of people is because in ancient times, Indian society was divided into four classes of people, based on their occupations. But gradually these classes became castes and there was very little social mixing between the castes and so people of each caste preferred being with their own people. Hence their homes were grouped together.

ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA, WHAT IS THE IDEAL TYPE OF SOIL IN A SITE?

To construct a building for any purpose, land is required. And it is a fact the land has not been previously not allocated for the same. It has to be some or the other kind of site that has to be used. It should be correctly noted for what purpose the land was being used previously. While purchasing land, it is ideal to buy a piece of land that is most suitable for cultivation i.e., where the vegetation can grow. There are different types of soil based on the colour- brick red, dark brown, white, red, yellow, black etc. Generally the soil which is good for cultivation like red, brick red, brown, yellow soil etc is also good for the foundation of a building. Whereas, black and clayey soil which is not good for cultivation is also not good for buildings as it retains water and can cause dampness to the foundation. It is advised to avoid a site with black and clayey soil. The Reason being, the black soil indicates soil that retains water and doesn't allow good drainage. It is best to avoid such a site because it will require special kind of foundation and water-proofing which will cost many time more than the usual foundation. Again avoid rocky piece of land for construction purpose. Land with too many rocks and thorny trees is not considered good. This is because it may be an indication that there is rock below which will have to be blasted out before laying the foundation, causing unexpected expenditure. A land with lot of worms should be avoided. This may be an indication that the soil is very loose and will not support the foundation well.

Vastu Tips for Diagonal Plot

The plots in and which the major directions fall in the corners are known as diagonal plots. As a result the magnetic meridian instead of passing through the centre of the plot makes an angle of 45 degree with the main axis of the plot. From residences to commercial complexes, any kind of building can be built on diagonal plots. Vastu Shastra suggests certain tips that will be instrumental in harmonizing the plot with the surrounding nature. The diagonal plots can have roads on North-East, the North-West, the South-East and the South-West sides. Amongst these plots with road on the North-East side are very considered auspicious by Vastu Shastra. The North-West and the South-East ones are of medium level. The ones in the Southwest are useful for certain business ventures but these should never be taken for residential purposes. The diagonal plots with roads on two, three or four sides give mixed results However the South-West side should not be used as entrance.

Utility for the Road

  • North-East Road: Residence, Temple, school, Library, shop and factories
  • North-West Road: Residence, Agricultural purpose, Showroom for vehicles and Garage.
  • South-East Road: Hotels, Residence, Courts, business run by women, entertainment, factories etc.

WHICH PLOTS ARE NOT GOOD?

  • In the diagonal plots the building constructions should not be oblique or diagonal to the plot. Every construction should be parallel to the direction of the plot as well as the adjacent roads.
  • If oblique construction is done the benefits of Vastu Shastra cannot be fully reaped. Even if the plot is diagonal, construction should never be oblique. North- East direction must have the maximum of open space in a diagonal plot. The building should be constructed in the South-West part.
  • Curved roads adjacent to the diagonal plots should always be avoided. Even within the compound wall no curve or oblique cut should be there.
  • The Western and the Southern angles of a plot should always be right angle (90)degree. It should not be more or less than 90degree.
  • If the Northern angle of a diagonal plot is of 88 degree and the Eastern angle of 92degree it leads to increase in wealth but the fame is limited. In such cases it is essential that the Southern and the Western angles should be of 90degree.
  • With the East side of a diagonal plot being 88 degree and the North 92degree one will get fame and publicity. However the money earned will not stay for a long span of time.
  • If in a diagonal plot both the angles on the east and the North sides measure 92 degree it gives rise to a pentagonal plot. A person staying in such a plot faces instability. He keeps on shifting from one job to the other. Wealth is earned but does not stay long. Avoid purchasing such plots. If at all purchased it is essential to make all angles of 90degree
  • If in a diagonal plot both the East and the North angles measure 88degree then in such a pentagonal plot the North-East direction is totally cut which leads to many calamities. Form making it useful converts the plot to a rectangular one.
  • For a diagonal plot the North-East approach road is very auspicious. The compound gate can be constructed at this place. The North-West approach road gives medium level mixed benefits. In front of the road on the west side the gate of the compound wall should be constructed. Do not build the roads in the North direction.
  • The South-East approach road is beneficial to some extent for hotels, electric shops, jewellery business run by women etc. The benefits are of medium level.
  • While constructing the compound wall of diagonal plots only the North-East wall should be light and made of bricks. The South-West wall should be high, thick and made of stone. The South - East and the North - West wall should be made of bricks and have a downward slope from the South to the East and from the West to the North. The compound wall on the North-East side should have the lowest height. Instead of a wall even a barbed wire fencing can serve the purpose. If the diagonal plot has a South-West road then the gate of the wall compound should be in the West. The entrance gate should open towards the North.
  • In the diagonal plot the well or the boring should be located in the North-East direction. there should not be any door of the compound wall or the building in front of the well. If the well is in the East or the North it would be quite helpful. Wells at improper places should be filled up and closed after proper worship.
  • The gate of the compound in a diagonal plot should in the South-West direction
  • Even if there is some fault in the construction of the building on a diagonal plot the loss is reduced from 100 % to 50 %. It is because the magnetic meridian is not passing through the centre. The profits or losses of Vastu Shastra are of medium level. When the magnetic meridian is passing through the middle of the plot proper results cannot be obtained. Therefore, a diagonal plot can be profitable because the losses are also less.
  • In the diagonal septic tank or water storage tank should not be situated in front of the compound gate otherwise it would lead to many difficulties.
  • The basement can be located in the North-East direction on a diagonal plot. However it should not be used for residential purposes. It can be only used as godown. Good or medium level benefits can be obtained. Vastu Shastra does not consider the basement quite auspicious. Hence it is better if there is no basement on a diagonal plot.

Kitchen is an important unit in any building. As a result special care must be taken for it. In a diagonal plot the kitchen should be in the east block of the plot. Such a position will give 100% result. If it is not possible the South block can also provide 90 % results while the west block gives 80 % results. The platform of the kitchen should be L type. However there is no such hard and fast rule that it has to be in this shape. But it must be kept in mind that the dining table should never be round, egg shaped or obliquely cut. It should always be square or rectangular in shape.

Bathrooms are best situated in the North Block. If the toilet is part of it then that should be situated in the West block. It is tolerable in the East block too. Never place it in the South block. Separate toilets in the diagonal plot should never be in the East or the North Block. It should be in the West block (100 %) or the South Block (80 %).

The Puja Room of the diagonal building should be in the East block where it leads to a 100 % result. The temple can also be placed in the North Block but it should never be in the West or the South blocks.

The most favorable position for the living room is in North Block. It is tolerable if it is in South-East of the East or the West blocks. Never place it in the South Block as it leads to conflicts and arguments.

Ideally in a diagonal building the bedroom should be in the West block. In the South block it is acceptable too (90%). The girls` bedrooms should be in the East Block. The children`s bedrooms should never be in the South Block.

The best results can be acquired if the study room is in the West block (100%). however there is no harm even if is located in the North or the East Block. However it should never be in the South block.

The dining room in a diagonal building is the best suited in the West block where it can generate 100% positive energy. It is acceptable in the North and the East blocks too. However it should never be in the South Block.

It is more profitable to have the strong room in the North block. If it is in the west block it gives 80 % results. Here the safe should be kept in the west side and it should open towards the North. It should be at least one foot away from the corner and should not be kept in an oblique position.

In the South-East block the store room should be situated. If it is in the North Block it gives 80 % results. The waste storage room of a diagonal building should be built in the South. It should never be in the East or the North blocks. If these are constructed in such positions then it will surely lead to huge financial losses. For open passage there are the East and the North sides. The articles including heavy materials should be stored in the south and the west part.

As per the rules of Vastu Shastra all the four corners of a diagonal plot must be open. The South -West direction does not come in any corner of this plot; it comes in the middle of the plot. Hence do not close any corner. a shed, godown or lumber room can be constructed by taking the support of 4/9th parts of the compound wall only in the South - West space.

In the diagonal plot construct a verandah or platform only on the East, North-East and North sides in one straight line. Steps to the platform can be constructed, but the platform must be kept intact.

The staircase should either be in the South block (100%) or in the West block (80%). these two sides are considered auspicious. It is far better, if the staircase is in a corner. It is also not bad, if it is in the middle of the South-West. While constructing the first floor of the Diagonal Plot, keep the Eastern, North-Eastern and Northern parts open for the construction of a terrace. Construction should be done in the Southern, South-West and West sides.

Vastu Guide for Griha Pravesh

Description and guidelines for all the processes right from the selection of site to construction of the building, and of orientation of various rooms in directions, height of the rooms, positions of the doors etc. is found in Vastu Shastra. Actually the text that guides us to plan and construct a town, temple, residential house, cattle shed, or any other building equipped with all necessary amenities for the comfort and utility of mankind is given the name Vaastu Shastra which has been divinely described in Indian culture and scriptures.Vastu for Griha Pravesh Griha Pravesh (i.e. first entry into the newly built house) is also as important aspect of Vaastu-Shastra. After the house is complete in all respects, living in that house is started at some auspicious moment determined on astrological considerations. The first entry in the house at the auspicious moment is called Graha Pravesh ceremony. For any newly built house house warming is considered a holistic occasion. This custom is done so as to keep evil forces away from entering new home. Even after land acquisition, a prayer (puja) is performed which is called as Bhumi Poojan, and later house warming ceremony is called as Vaastu-shanti

When the house is ready to be occupied, a muhurta is selected for grihya pravesha which consists mainly of Ganesha puja (Ganapati), The mandala is drawn to invoke the gods and nine planets, which act as witnesses to the ceremony. The offerings in the form of fire (Agni) which is supposed to convey to the gods. The family carries the havan kunda into every room. The various medicinal ingredients in the smoke from the havan disinfect and purify the air within. The house is encircled with thread three times from the east, which is the most auspicious direction. Both these signify the erection of protective barriers around the house to keep away evil influences, and are done to the accompaniment of the Rakshoghna Mantra and the Pavamana Mantra.A pit dug in the southeast corner of the boundary of the house with sides of the pit fortified with cowdung paste and the pit is worshipped. A brick box containing corn, moss, and flowers is lowered into the pit, which is then filled up. Since corn symbolises fertility, this is believed to ensure prosperity Holy water sprinkled around the house is to keep away evil spirits With this, grihya pravesha is completed.

Three types of Graha Pravesh have been mentioned in the scriptures

  • Apoorva - First entry to live in house newly constructed on a newly selected land is called Apoorva (new) Graha Pravesh.
  • Sapoorva - Entry into an already existing house to live in it after traveling abroad or migration elsewhere, is called Sapoorva graha pravesh.
  • Dwandwah - Entry into a house to live in it after reconstruction/renovation of the house damaged by fire, flood waters, electricity, wind etc. is termed as Dwandwah (or old) Graha Pravesh.
Month Results

Jeshtha Gain of son and cattle.

Besides these, the months of Kartik and Margshirsh give medium results. Graha Pravesh in the months of Ashadh, Shravan, Bhadrapad, Ashwin Paush is inauspicious and causes loss, troubles and pains, and fear of enemies. The tithies (dates) 4/9/14 and 30 (Amavas - no moon night) should be avoided and Graha Pravesh should not be done on Tuesdays.
